Firstly thanks to everyone for the input, I realize there's still a lot
more to work on before I get to a properly working machine...lol.
Initially I did have a dremel on the machine, but the noise it made was
terrible, and it melted the Perspex even at it's slowest speed which is
7000 RPM. So that's why I went to the hand drill.
I'm definitely going to be looking for new type of drive there.... But I
seem to get the idea that speed really isn't the main aim of the game. I
cannot justify spending much more money on this project since it was
originally built from scrap, whole thing cost me less than 50 Bucks to
build, Hell I'm using threaded rod for linear actuation...... lol So I
guess I'll shell out and replace the hand drill and then live with
whatever speed I get out of it.
Thanks a million, This group has been a great help.. at least now I can
do some calculations rather than just "wing it" like I've been doing so
far..
P.S. I checked out that stuff on e-bay looks really cool, but no one
wants to ship to Africa where I live... unfortunately..
Have a good one
johann

Listmembers have also had good luck with the Proxxon IB/E rotary tool:
http://www.minicrafttools.com/38481.html
<http://www.minicrafttools.com/38481.html>
which is cheaper, at ~$100. Not as good as a high quality air spindle,
but
folk seem to be satisfied.
Along with rotary tools, people are also using laminate cutters. Dig
through
the list archives or ask for firm suggestions, you'll get lots.
I'd also suggest you pick up some books, like a copy of Machinery's
Handbook
and "Machine Shop Essentials" by Frank Marlow.
