My main income stream is controlled by M$ rules, and I've just had to
switch another site to W8.1. Using the start menu restoration tools and
un-installing the M$ programs which insist on switching to tablet mode,
and one has an almost clean windows environment again.

I've been using Linux on the desktop for many years now, and much of the
infrastructure is now native Linux code, so it's may seem strange that
I'm sill running Mach3 on the ITX boxes for the CNC systems. But it
works well for me and the price for a complete 'Mach-in-a-box' is
reasonable compared with what used to be available. However these boxes
will no even install W8.1 so perhaps now is the time to try and find a
little time to finally run up the LinuxCNC alternative. What muddied the
water is the VERY NICE gcode generator built in to USBCNC. Chuck a well
layered DXF file at it and one gets a nice set of gcode ... One can use
the software FOC which adds to the attraction, but the entry level PCB's
are moving up the cost ladder :(
