From what I can see with these different types is that the taper is
the same on all of them what differs is the driving flange and the
overall length. Some of the flanges are different. I was told that
the CAT's have different width slots so that the tool changer can
orient itself but I personally can't comment. What I do know is that
some of them have a parallel diameter on the small taper end and some
don't. The BT40 have just a taper and the ISO 40's have a plain piece.
My Beaver will take ISO's or BT's all I have to do is make a longer
pull stud for the Bt's so the overall length is the same. J&L here in
the UK has these on offer from time to time as a bare chuck. When
they are on offer I usually buy a couple.
#40 is very popular here, more so than #30 or R8 and they are hard to
find. I only have about 10 tool holders and with two more #40
machines on their way it's going to be a problem
