Now that I know the rest of the details, I can see why using acme screws wouldn't suit the application.
Sounds like what your really need is a door mechanism that will both slide OR pivot.

I wonder....there just might be something like that available in one of my woodworking catalogs..if I see something like that I'll let you know.
