Very true. That is one of the ideas I've considered. I see several
surplus suppliers have a lot of geared reversible PM DC motors, or a
higher torque stepper would work direct drive, as you say. I could
even just use a toothed belt, the belt only needs to be a bit longer
than the door has to slide, the rest can be cable. I'd want to use a
couple of idlers to wrap the belt around the pully a bit more.

Hey, all of this knowledge and experience I'm gaining is going to go
right into construction of the mill/engraving tables I'm working on.

Thanks for the advice about catalogs with no pricing, BTW.
