Doug,
A fairly tall cylinder with an inlet extending several inches down from
the top and an outlet at the very top shouldn't pick up much liquid,
especially if you place a baffle in front of the outlet to prevent any
possible direct splashes from hitting the outlet.
A 18" or so length of tubular drive shaft tubing would work.
You'd still really want some sort of filter between this and the pump.
