even if they do still make them I would not suggest using a 1 gallon
Mayonaise jar or any other jar that was not pressure or vacuum rated.
Laboratory Bell jars used for vacuum experiments are very thick as much as 1
inch thick depending on the size. Someone could be seriously injured if the
jar shattered. You could you 4 in. schedule 40 PVC instead. It's very
cheap and very easy to work with. But if you must use a Mayonaise jar
please enclose it in a heavy box or garbage can in case is shattered.

<< Doug,
A fairly tall cylinder with an inlet extending several inches down from
the top and an outlet at the very top shouldn't pick up much liquid,
especially if you place a baffle in front of the outlet to prevent any
possible direct splashes from hitting the outlet.
A 18" or so length of tubular drive shaft tubing would work.
You'd still really want some sort of filter between this and the pump.

You could use a 1 gallon Mayonaise jar if they still make them in glass.
I've seen the units doctors use for lipo suction. That is exactly what you
need.
