Hi Tim and Randy,

In a little while Paul will have his BDI CD fully sorted and this will make
installing EMC and Linux a doddle. I have been doing some beta testing for
him and I am very impressed with the ease of installation. The installation
will be aimed at a standard pentium based machine but it will make virtually
all the decisions for you - just like a windoze program! It is based on one
of the most recent releases of linux and rtlinux and so has a lot more
features than the old 5.2 kernel offered - the last two versions I tested
even had 'supermount' patched in which allows you to put CDs and floppies
into the machine and remove them again just like windoze, no more
'mount/umount' messing about.
I would suggest that you wait a couple of weeks until Paul has things to his
satisfaction and, in the meantime, find a pentium-based computer and any
add-on cards you want (network, sound etc.), give it a hard drive of 2 or 3
gigabytes or more, temporarily load windoze and make a note of what it
thinks the video card, network card, sound card etc. is and the IRQ it has
assigned to them (just in case they are a type which linux can't recognise,
which isn't many nowadays) and find out what model of monitor you want to
use with the machine and, if possible, what its horizontal and vertical
refresh rates are. The you will be good and ready to install linux and EMC
and you should be able to get the whole bag of mashings up an running in
less than an hour. Most of the information I've just recommended you find
out, you will not need but its useful to have it to hand just in case. At
least, unlike windoze, you are not going to have to find driver disks and
programs for everything! You will find EMC is better than most other cnc
programs currently available within a 'sensible' price range and compares
well with most others.

Ian

p.s. Randy, I was purely DOS and Windoze based before I started to take an
interest in EMC - now I love linux. Its very like DOS and conversion from
one to the other is quite a painless process. If you use the kde desktop
environment, its just like windoze and, apart from the colours, you probably
won't notice much difference.
