I tend to agree that MS like bloat is creeping/rushing into many of the
products that ship with Linux. Perhaps it's because that's what some MS
Windows code writers do in their spare time. Mini windows managers like
Twm, ice, xfce do a good job and demand less of the hardware while still
running the X-windows system.
There is also at least one user interface to the EMC that will run
directly from the startup Linux terminal with no windowing environment at
all. With a few DOS-like batch files or compiled loop it will do a good
job repeating any g-code program with just start and e-stop buttons.
I've been talking with a Single Board Computer maker about a disk-on-chip
version. Easy to get a text based system on 8 Meg and a X-windows version
on 32 Meg. Hook a network to it and it's a no moving parts machine tool
controller for less than a $1000. Compare that with prices listed in
Andrew's recent report on PC controllers at Westec and you can get an idea
of the margin available to work with. (Thanks Andrew)
I think that there will be at least one all-in-one EMC to step motors box
shown at NAMES.
