Yes, my background is completely in DOS/Windows/NT. If your only goal is to
get EMC up and running and you are willing to invest just a little time to
verify that you have compatible hardware, you can know virtually nothing
about Linux and get EMC running if you are willing to stick with the version
written for RedHat 5.2. I have written a scripted installation for the real
time kernel extensions which is the part that was tripping up most everyone.
The trick with it is:
1 - Use only known compatible hardware
2 - Use a dedicated machine and don't try multi boot and special partition
strategies
3 - Use an IDE hard drive under 4 or so gig (1 gig is plenty)
4 - Setup RedHat 5.2 using the workstation install with no deviation
5 - Configure X-windows for 800 X 600 or better
6 - Follow the rest of the instructions explicitly
If you are using a Pentium/PII/PIII or AMD K6/7 in the 300 or better range
the install can be done in about 1 - 1-1/2 hours with most of the time
dedicated to letting the machine sit and compile.
After that you just treat the box as a CNC controller and don't try to use
it as a PC unless you are wanting to learn more about Linux.
