Dan,
Funny you should write about this. While I'd really like to find an
automatic cold saw with a dead control, even that isn't going to be
cheap. I've been thinking about converting my HV saw (an older Clausing)
and wondered about the feed control on the saw. If a feed rate was
programmed that was even a bit too fast for the cut, it could cause the
blade to wander, or even break on deep cuts.
I've been thinking about some form of control that would allow feed
based on pressure. Something along the lines of the Z screw being
attached to a mechanism whereby the saw frame would float between two
springs, and an adjustable micro switch would contact the frame under
some adjustable amount of preload. The upper spring and gravity would
provide down feed to the point where the two springs equalize, at which
point the Z motor would start feeding until getting a signal from the
limit switch that the desired preload level had been reached.
Did you do anything like this at all, or did you just adjust feed rates
until you were happy with the cut?
