Jon (and all):
Can you put a little added friction on the table via the table locks? If
the friction is enough to avoid the tool forces "slamming" the table
through any backlash, climb cutting should be OK?
I take light cuts (I get scared otherwise) and have infrequently run into
this problem with climb milling. I do avoid climbing with heavier cuts
though. After installing ball screws I have some +-.001 backlash and
haven't had trouble. But not much machining time with this new
setup. Climb cutting feels less scary with ball screws but it could be my
imagination. :-)
I suspect this problem of "slamming" through the backlash is more a problem
with CNC where you're doing more motion changes and are more removed from
the process?
