Hello Dave,
The hydraulic shock absorber it is an interesting idea, but that would become awful long and not cheap at all.
pneumatic wouldn't work.
So at the end a preloaded ball nut becomes still cheaper and most efficient.
I have seen in two occasions that the preload was achieved by a separation ring that became loose. After relocating it, the backlash
was gone.
