Pretty simple answer, actually. You TELL it(the software) how much
backlash is present in the machine. And you update this information
as often as you need to, considering your machine and usage...
NO ONE is saying that software can, or should, correct for "variable"
backlash ("Jumping", you called it). A "crappy" machine is just that.
Although "adaptive" CNC controls DO attempt to concern themselves
with process variations, and make corrections "on the fly" so the
parts are all good! Which lets a "crappy" machine make "better" parts
than it otherwise would be capable of making...
