Hi Al,

Yes, there are two books which come to mind. Both are out of
print BUT easy to find ( try www.abebooks.com or powells.com )
The best one of the two ( I think ) is called Numerical
Control by Glenn Ertell. It was published in 1969. This book
develops the concepts of what Numerical Control requires ie:
Interpolation, positional feedback, variable feedrate and such.
Notice that I said Numerical Control as opposed to CNC. The
concepts are the same except that in NC it's all done in Hardware
and in CNC the control processes are done in software.
The next book is called Computer Control of Manufacturing
Systems by Yoram Koren. This book was published around 1983. It is
also a good book but more abstract and geared to engineering
types. It is still worth buying.
These books will tell you quickly how axis coordination is
accomplished, and get you well on your way.
Also, look for any documentation on early Numerical Control
(s) such as General Electric's mark Century Series such as the
Model 100 or any of the Allen Bradley stuff...Series 7300.
I have the Model 100 manual and can copy it for you if you want.
