My method of dealing with video is to get the system fully installed
and then tweak the video with the xvidtune program. Most of the
older mainstream video cards will do all the standard stuff with
the svga driver. The Trident cards (I've used a number of Trident 8900's
with good results) have good frequency synthesizers for the pixel
clock, so you have a very wide range of frequencies available to
get just the perfect display. Once I find good parameters with xvidtune,
I then put those into /etc/X11/XF86Config so i can select from several
video modes.

Your main partition may be running out of space.
You had 2 GB in the E partition? That should be enough, though.
