Just for the record - new user note - the easiest way to shut down a linux
system safely is to open a terminal window (the button looking like a TV set
on the bottom bar) and type 'halt' (no quotes) followed by the return key.
This will set the whole shut down process going and is easier that going
through the several stages of shutting down through the GUI.
