If you shut down a Linux system without unmounting the file system first
(the shutdown procedure does this) you can have damage to the file system.
If you can get logged in at all, you need to run a file system check/repair
like this :

fsck /dev/hda1

It will ask a bunch of "shall I fix blahblah Yes/no" questions, type y for
all of them. Unfortunately, you may lose your root directory structure,
and everything will end up in "lost+found". You shouldn't mess with files
in the /dev directory without a LOT of Linux knowledge. For instance,
the command more /dev/hda1 will type out on the screen the entire binary
contents of that disk partition, which should look very much like goobledegook.
But, it normally is NOT garbage, you just aren't supposed to look at things
that way.

If the bootup scripts don't allow you to log in after it finds this error, you
may well have to reload from the CD. It is possible to build a rescue floppy
from the CD, and use that to start fsck from the floppy.

When you set up your partitions, you should make sure that the process
checks the data blocks on the disk before loading BDI/EMC. You may
have one or more bad disk blocks. (I have a pile of obsolete/dumpster
diving computer stuff, and had a 1 GB hard drive go bad a little while ago.
When i saw the number of bad blocks increasing every time I rescanned
the drive, it became obvious it was dying, block by block.)
