Most of the time they are date codes.
When I was a moldmaker in aluminum diecasting, we would punch a small dot in
one of the 12
openings in the wagonwheel pattern for the corresponding month. At the end
of the year , I would have to TIG
weld the dots without getting over into the wagonwheel. Very Tricky.
