If you do have some money available for something beyond the
freeware/shareware market, you might want to look into Vinyl cutting
software. Likely, most of what you will be doing will be "On the Line"
cutting. Most all of your modern offerings allow for tangential output
because the plotters use it. Usually you are offered many options for that
toolpath as well like "Pounce".

I watched a commercial carboard box prototype machine in action once. Really
neat ! They even had tangential rollers to come down and make the creases.

SignLab, FlexiSign, SignWizard, SignMate, and numerous Corel "Add-Ons" come
to mind.
