Sorry Sean, Gotta disagree,

These "jog" wheels ARE used as "hand" wheels by machinists everyday...
Several posts have said so in this thread alone.

Also, I have found that having the ability to set an arbitrary "jog"
increment can be very useful... (as many of the pc based controllers
allow) But you are correct that it can be hazardous. I DID once!
forget to reset it to a small value after using it to make 4.500"
moves during "manual" operation of a cnc mill. Luckily the mill did
not have terribly fast rapids, and the feedhold prevented
catastrophe...
But I LIKE having the ability to go an arbitrary distance in jog; and
miss it sometimes working with "REAL" cnc controls.
