The original DC motor was switched to a lower voltage, but did not shut off,
it just stalled and applied torque thru the worm gear, this kept the turret
locked in5to the detent position.

If using a stepper, I would assume that the holding torque would keep it
locked into the detent position.

So many steps forward for each position, then so many steps back once in
position, to lock the ratchet indent.
