RE: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Re: PLC Programming - anyone?

Hi Dave,

What I'll have is this.

3 solenoids
3 normally open switches
1 on/off dry contact that is controlled by the controller

I'm using a Turner Technologies MC2001, so the Gecko's and such aren't
an option.

If you could help, that'd be great.

Thanks,
-Chris Clough

Hi Chris,

just like any control devices, look for the signals
you will need. Digital (on/off) or analogue (4-20mADC)
analogue will always be a lot more.

then look at the speed of the pulse train both
input if reading a field device and output
going to your device.

Automationdirect.com offers a variety of units,
small unit with slower speed and less memory
to networkable units that can power an entire factory.

Check the ratings on the input and output modules and
see if they fit your requirements.
both power and speed.

A PLC can be cheaper than a PC running professional
software, or if you have an old PC and use
TurboCNC ($10) and a Gecko, ($150??) you can
get by pretty cheap. remember if you use the
PLC you need to learn the ladder lodgic language
but if you use a CNC software package that runs
on a PC, MAster5 and a decent Pentium II or better
you can get great help on one of these sites.
(currently a speed limitation on stepper pulses)

A PLC is really nothing but a microprocessor
and a software package.

Yes they can be faster if you buy a higher end unit
but then you won't get the pretty displays unless
you dedicate a PC to monitor it, but if you
buy or dedicate a PC, you have what you need
to do the control too. catch-22

how many outputs do you need ?
ie: switches on and off
stepper/servo's

how many inputs?
ie: end switches
encoder feedback

break your needs down into the basic application
and evaluate your choices/options.

Dave
