This is found on machines with very large tool carousels. 30-40 plus
tools at once. They use a swap arm for 1-2 second tool change (with
a 50 taper toolholder), but it may take a minute or two to position
to the correct place in the magazine. Okuma is one brand for sure.
There are others too, mostly older. The T command was called to pre-
position and the M06 to swap current tool with new tool. Some may
even have implemented a preposition command separate from the T
callout. If I remember correctly it was also possible to get tool 1
placed in tool 10's slot and you could lose track of a tool in the
magazine. These are usually found in tool changers that have a
load/unload station, rather than requiring that the tool be placed in
the system by loading it first in the spindle.

There are some newer technology Turning centers that have tool change
out robotics that require pre-positioning too. I have not used one
to confirm that the controller is smart enough to do the
prepositioning by itself.
