I started with half stepping drivers, 1150 in.lb. 200 cog motors and 2:1
reduction on 5TPI ballscrews. This gave a resolution of 4000 pulses per
inch (.00025). Unfortunately, resonance was so bad the motors would not
track. Vibration at some frequencies would vibrate a screwdriver off the
table of the machine (brand new Supermax YCM-40).
I switched to microstepping drivers. Wanting to keep rapid speeds as fast
as possible, I started with 1/5 stepping with the intention of going up from
there. The difference between 1/2 stepping and 1/5 stepping was hard to
believe. The motors don't even sound like steppers.
The Microkinetics software/board does not support ramping in jog mode, so I
switched to cncpro. With a 486DX4 I can get feeds of 40 in/min and never
loose a step. Rapid and jog work fine at 50 in/min. I have tried 75 in/min
but found the 486 a little anemic for the task. Based on Doug Yeager's
data, I should be able to at least double the rapid rate with a Pentium.
Microstepping drivers are definitely worth the extra money, IMHO.
