there is also an intensifier to magnify the clamping force of the spring
stack ,like this un

a search around will turn up the ott-jakob catalogs with many more cutaway
drawings showing the spindle inside contour for the gripper and all that
the specs for the steep machine tapers (3.5" taper/ft ) goes all the way
down to a 5 taper with a 1/2" gage line dia ,for the Sherline you might
be able to fit a new spindle for 10 taper holders with itty-bitty
retention knobs ,Schaublin makes ISO10 taper holders ,dont know about
the price on them but I'm sure they are gona be up there ;)
