Hi Peter,
I think there are good and bad points about the compressor. as you
may know, compressors make vibration from the pistons, if you use a
piston style. There are screw compressors that have MUCH less
vibration.
I know some air conditioning units have these so there may be a way
to get one without the high first cost.
Also, air compressors make most noise from intake and exhaust. a
silencer is not too difficult to make. sound travels in the line of
sight and will bounce off hard objects.some wood baffles would help
reduce the noise to tollerable levels.
The big question is how much power you need. a 1hp compressor is not
too large, but a 5hp would be pretty big.
also, storage tanks offer capacatance so better pressure and speed
regulation is possible with them. there are often many sources of
storage tanks available. currently here in the US, water style fire
extinguishers are being phased out. brand new, all stainless 5
gallon tanks with 200 PSI ratings are available for a song.
stainless is the only way to go as water will accumulate in the tank.
