Allowing software setting of the "jumper" values was *exactly* what I was
talking about - and no, I was not imagining that the software would
physically fit/remove the jumpers.
All the jumper does is to allow you to (manually) set a pin lo or hi,
depending on whether the jumper is fitted or not. One pin of the jumper
pair will be the "active" pin that the logic takes notice of; the other pin
will either be connected to 0V or 5V, depending on how Mariss has chosen to
make the jumpers work.
If the active pin has a pullup that causes it to float to +5 when the
jumper is not fitted, then the other pin of the pair will be connected to
the 0V rail, hence fitting the jumper causes the active pin to be dragged low.
If the active pin has a pulldown that causes it to be held at 0V when the
jumper is not fitted, then the other pin will be connected +5V, hence
fitting the jumper causes the active pin to be pulled high.
So, there is (already) the potential to toss those particular jumpers &
connect a software-controllable signal directly onto the active pins. By
making the jumpers accessible without removing the can, Mariss will just be
making easier what is already a possibility.

Tony
