P.S. Technical stuff for John:

What I meant by "it's a neat way to sense MOSFET over-teperature" is
this method takes into account a MOSFET's current derating with
junction temperature.

Rds doubles from 25C to 125C in an IR530 and it's max rated Ids drops
from 14A to 8A over the same range. By top-side sensing the "on" Vds
and using it to trip a fault when it is past a certain threshold
neatly takes the Ids derating curve into account.
