You can also run Maxnc from Turbocnc software.

I have a Maxnc system running a mill I built from parts I had laying
around. The Max stuff works fine but faster would be nice. The
Turbocnc software can help speed things up since it lets you tune
the motors individually and not one speed for X,Y & Z. Like Maxnc
it runs in dos so you can use an inexpensive older computer to run
the mill.

To speed up the motors I replaced the power supply to up the voltage
from 12 to 18 which helped a lot and the motors now run warmer but
not hot. It seems to have boosted the speed from 25 to 30%
