I think 3 Amps is too small. I think you might find a 7 Amp regulated
supply
would be about the minimum that will work. On the onter hand, a 5-7 Amp
UNREGULATED supply probably will work a lot better. it has the capability
to supply short bursts of current well above the continuous rating. The
regulated supply will dip severely in voltage right above the rating (or
wherever you set the current limit at).

Jameco has a 48 V 10.4A power supply available for $69.95, their part
no. is 202913CD. This is a switching supply, and regulated, but it is
obviously beefy enough. I can't find any better deals in unregulated
supplies at the moment.

If you use a fuse, Gecko recommends placing a capacitor across the
power input terminals. See the data sheet for the drive.
