If you are driving Geckos and supplying the 5v form the PC then on ground is
need. The circuit is completed inside the laptop.
I think the problem is the drive capability of a laptop may not be enough to
drive the
optoisolators. I us a 74hct541 driver between the PC and the Geckos.
If you ground the laptop
to the geckos the you are bypassing the isolation.
