Are your motors stiff when the Geckos are powered on? If so, then they
are probably OK.

I have some questions about the parallel port - Gecko connections.
You have an external 5V supply, with the + connected to the Geckos.
Where is the minus from this supply connected to? It needs to be
connected to the grounds on the parallel port.
