Weyland,

Read the Gecko stepper whitepaper from front to back a couple of times.
Pretty much everything you are asking is in there along with graphs and
illustrations to better explain it. On an 8 wire motor there are 3 ways
to wire it for bipolar. All three take different current settings and
all three are explained in detail in the whitepaper. Your specs are not
listing what connection scheme the rating is for, but based on it being
higher we can pretty well assume it is for parallel.
