I'm not sure about "tinned" small stranded wire, but this is a known
issue with aluminum building wire. Until they figured out how to
fabricate connectors with set screws which were acceptable, you had
to use a compression terminal (10,000 pound/sq. inch hyraulic cripper
used) to attach a lug or a coupling with a copper pig tail to go
on/in the switch and panel connectors. Over the years the aluminum
would "flow" in a mechanical connector and become loose (I think
because the coefficiant of expansion was different between the
aluminum and a copper connector). In a CNC controller this
loostening would cause some sparks and smoke. In the main electrical
service for an office building, the sparks are bigger and you get
more smoke :-)
