A properly crimped joint is gas-tight. There has to be a reason why
virtually all CNC manufacturers use bootlace ferrules rather than tinned
wires...
I have also had plenty of soldering experience, everything from
tinning heavy gauge wires to hand soldering 144 pin QFP packages.
In a damp corrosive environment such as motorcyle wiring looms I tend to
crimp then quickly solder the end where the wire is crimped. If it is
done quickly the solder does not have time to wick up the strands far
enough to get past the strain relief.
