What would you do? was Gecko burned out ( about tinned leads and other things)

I would offer both kind of drives and let the customer choose.
The low volume customers who have "burned up" drives in the past
would certainly see the value, and therefore be more willing to
accept the additional cost, in the protected drive.
I've had good luck with my 201's but if there was a protected drive
out there I would sure weigh the cost of failure against the value of
my production down-time...or the cost of keeping spares on the shelf.
Just my 2 cents worth
