Hi Andy,
There are two problems with tinning stranded wire. If the wire is
subjected to flexing or vibration it will fail where the strands meet
the solder. Also solder tends to flow under pressure so over time the
connection can become loose.
The best way to terminate the wire is to use a bootlace ferrule. You
crimp the ferrule onto the wire then push the whole lot into the
terminal. The ferrule stops the strands from spreading out and also
provides some strain relief for the wire. If you look inside just about
any modern CNC machine you will see that most of the wires are
terminated in this way.
Bootlace ferrules are thin walled so don't take up much more space in
the connector than a bare wire.
