Below is a reply I received from EBY, regarding this practice, they seem to
think it's OK.

Now I am really interested in where this "wisdom" came from, I know the
fabricators at my shop are all convinced that it is true.

I will post any further info I find on this.

Dear Andy,

Though, most people do not tin their stranded wires before installation,
we have several customers that do. I am not aware of any negative effect
of such an action, except that:

1. You are adding an extra process and cost
2. The conductivity of Tin is not as good as the original bare
copper.

The advantage of tinning the leads is that you reduce the chance of
having a stray wire strand outside the connection, due to a sloppy
installation.

I hope this helps. Should you like to discuss this further, please feel
free to contact me.

Best Regards,

I have often been told that when using terminal blocks such as your
EB550 or
EB1350 series, I should NOT tin stranded wires before inserting them and
tightening the screw.

Is this true, and if so, why?
