Umm, A Bridgeport sized mill is usually fitted with something in the
region of a 30 in-lb motor. If you used a 250 in-lb monster on a plasma
cutter it would probably tear the gantry off and throw it though the
nearest wall!

Assume that the motor has a top speed of 2000rpm and is geared for a top
speed of 200IPM. This gives 10 revs/inch.

Assuming 100% transmission efficiency the thrust available would be 250
* 2 * pi * 10 = 15707 lbs. If your gantry weighs 100 lbs you would have
an acceleration of 157g

If you want a smaller driver than Gecko or Rutex then IMService have a
30V 5A servo driver

I think somewhere between 20 and 30 in-oz with a top speed of 2000 -
3000 rpm would be ideal for a plasma cutter.
