I'd steer clear of motors with an open enclosure. Chips go in everything especially using compressed air to clean up. Of course some outer housings could be fashioned from some PVC pipe. Would house the encoder on the back of the motor as well. Mount the motor leads and encoder plugs right in the PVC cap. Generally, due to low load operations, Servo motor heating isnt that big of a problem. Especially on a motor that large. I'm curious to how well one of those would suffice as a servo.

1) Has anyone ever connected this motor to a G320 servo drive?
2) Is there a difference between a DC Permanent Magnet Motors and
Servo DC Motor?
If these motors would work like a servo motor, they would make a
lowcost high power servo motor.

Apart from Ebay, http://www.surpluscenter.com/ have some motors that
work well on a Bridgeport size mill or larger router. Look for items
10-1783 or 10-1573. Item 10-1573 has a longer shaft sticking out the
back for an encoder. If you grind the shaft down a bit then the
encoder off of item 10-1834 can be made to fit. They also do a number
of smaller servo motors.
Pretty much any permanent magent DC motor can be made into a servo
motor with the addition of an encoder. It won't have the same
acceleration and smoothness as a proper servo motor but in practise
they still work well.
