For servo motion control or spindle? For axis drive, 2.5 Hp is WAY
overkill. I'm running a Bridgeport
with motors rated for 1/8 HP (continuous) at 1725 RPM! I would advise
using motors
slightly larger than this, as my acceleration is just a bit limited with
this. Assuming a
2:1 peak torque rating for this motor, I develop a theoretical 715
pounds of linear force
on the table. (I can actually go twice that high, at least.) That is
still plenty of force to
break cutters off at the collet. So, there's really no purpose served
with these MASSIVE
servo motors people talk about, unless you need to accelerate in 1/4" to
400 IPM speeds.
Some router applications need this, but it is just not needed for a home
shop CNC mill.
