Luke, Don't be intimidated by the complexity of building a CNC system. It's not like one is required to research and develop control components. Much of it is basically plug and play practically these days. The first step would be decide how large of a machine you intend to build. Then select the appropriate sized servos for the task using a 2 or 3:1 reduction on each axis. Try to select servos that are in the 100 volt and around 15 amps or less range with a USdigital E5S-200 encoder. Select a proper sized power supply that puts out around 72 volts DC and around 10 -15 amps or applicable to whatever size servos you select. And I strongly suggest that you use Mach2 for control software, Bob Campbells Mach2 breakout board and Gecko 320 servo drives. Those three elements work perfectly together. They were designed to favor each other from what I've gathered although they will work with other configurations as well. This is exactly how I built mine and it was relatively easy to do and it
is very reliable and I've been using it daily for almost two years. I was in the same boat as you and overwhelmed by the complexity of it all. The software, interface and drives that I mentioned make it relatively simple to do.
Here is a link to a free electronics course that I've been reading and it is pretty helpful:
http://home.planet.nl/~heuve345/electronics/courses.html
It's a good thing to learn but not imperative to assemble a control. If you want you can E-mail me offlist with questions and I'll try to answer them for you at rogersmach@...

Hello Dave,
First I want to thank you for clearing up
my post issue.
When I say I am weak on Electronics, I think it my be an understatement.
Am I getting in over my head here in wanting to learn the "ins" and "out "
of building a CNC Plasma Cutter - Mainly the Control and Servos?
Will I be asking much too elementary questions for those on this Forum?
Will people even take the time to answer such questions?
Or would it be better for me to seek this basic information else where?
When I read the many posts of all the knowledgeable people on this Forum
I feel that I may be insulting people's intelligence with some of my basic
questions ... though I am sure many of the members have been in my shoes
at one time or another.
Thanks,
