It is more complicated than that. They shun outside connections and
they shun ornamentation. The women's clothes do not use buttons,
they are held on by pins. Buttons are considered ornamentation.
This does not apply to men. It would be hard to keep your clothes
on while doing hard work if pins were used.

Also you need to understand that there are a number of sects within
the Amish and Mennonite communities. Mennonites have cars
but used to paint the chrome bumpers black because chrome was
considered ornamentation. Some sects may allow phones at home
but the Amish that I saw did not. Business is different as I
discussed before.

Perhaps you are confusing them with orthodox Jews who do not make fire
on the Sabbath. They try to live within walking distance of their
synagogue so they do not have to use their cars. A furnace in their
house is OK because it makes fire automatically. A car only makes
fire when you start it. They believe that you may not make fire on the
Sabbath.

Pete.
