Tinning the wires with solder makes the wire easier to handle, but there
is some controversy about whether it makes the connection more or less
reliable.

Some folks will tell you that the soldered wire will slowly work it's
way out of the connector over time. I am not sure of the exact reason
for this. I know that some wiring uses crimped ferrules on the end of a
stranded cable to get around this problem.

Also, if you are using "phoenix"-type screw terminals(like the ones on
the geckos) it is important not to tin the wires if there will be more
than 1 in the same terminal, as two different tinned wire ends will not
be the same diameter even if they are before you tin them, and the
stiffness of the tinned end will make it hard to get a good grip one the
smaller one. This applies to solid wire in these connectors also; if
there are 2, they should be the same size.

Finally, on equipment which has lot of vibration(probably not
applicable unless your Geckos are mounted to the frame of the machine
they are driving) then tinning the ends of the stranded wires can cause
problems with breakage of the wire at the point where the tinning ends,
and the strands begin. This can=n also be avoided by the use of the
crimp ferrules mentioned above.

For all of these reasons, I avoid tinning wires when possible, for use
in the Phoenix-style connectors.

But maybe I'm just being anal-retentive..........

Why use connectors at all, you're just adding additional expense and
another potential failure point. I wired my steppers directly to the
terminal strips on my Gecko's in the control box. I've only had to take
them off once so far, which is pretty easy to do, so external connectors
wouldn't have bought me much so far, and I don't expect to be removing
them very often.

Actually the terminal strips on Gecko drives are actually connector
themselves, they pop off from a row of connector pins on the drive.

The wires are strain relieved and grommeted where needed as they enter
the box. I also use a soldering iron to "tin" any wire I'm using with a
terminal strip, it makes the connection more solid and reliable.
