Hi Ballendo,
As you know, I breifly had a unipolar kit as well. Strangely
enough, probably half of them were sold *outside* the USA (it
seems). That means going to the Post Office and standing in line
quite a bit.
Anyway, I also started getting people 'popping' the chips. Almost
always it was due to a short circuit (usually a wire, but once I
think it was actaully the proverbial screwdriver). I also offered
replacement chips at the time, for $12.50 (IIRC). I don't think
Daves $15.00 is outrageous at all (as some thought). For the price
of his kit, getting a replacement for $15.00 should be considered a
fair deal.
And definitely, you never know what some one is going to do with a
self assembly kit. Even the assembled and test components I sell
get abuse from eager, enthusiastic, CNCers. Stuf (is that the
correct 4 letter word spelling!?!) happens!
Your box and Dave's board are at the complete opposite ends of the
spectrum as far as what bad things can happen to them. From total
open, to almost isolated. You'll have better luck as far
as 'popping' is concerned.
Yes, most everything will 'pop'. Things that might make a 3977 pop
might not make a 7062 pop. Things that might make a 7062 might not
make a gecko pop. Things that might make a gecko pop, well, you get
the picture. The question arises as to how much extra robustness is
really necessary or required to be built in, and at what cost?
Jeff
PS. If I were a betting man, I'd bet you'll be modifying that list
of things that are covered under "your fault" :-)
