It doesn't actually "require" the PPT0106, although it will be quite a bit
easier if you use it. The documentation for the SCT0106 driver module is
complete and could be used to setup your own breakout or a different
controller source (microcontroller for example.) What you get with the
PPT0106 is the 5v logic supply, the current regulation voltage reference,
and the automatic sync-mode control. Originally I was going to make the
modules self-contained (logic supply, etc.) but realized it would be cheaper
to consolidate certain functions into the breakout board. I kept them
separate for better physical design flexibility when building a box. The
drivers are based on the SLA7062M, which by the way does not have a
full-step mode, but does not lose any steps when in sync mode. I've been
using this setup in half-step mode for months and have not had any problems.
