I've got a 120VAC variac but my transformer is 220. Can I connect the
variac to one of the mains legs and vary the voltage that way?

And don't use a wall-mount light dimmer, this is not a variable
transformer, it passes the full 110VAC just chopped up.

Wanliker's recomendation of a battery charger is a good one.
