I am not up to speed on variacs myself. Especially connecting a 220
one to 110. Now that I think about it some more and see some of the
other posts, I believe that he plugged the radios into the variac so
that the power supply in the radio converted the ac to dc at low
voltage and was brought up slowly. That way all of the capacitors in
the radio were formed at the same time. He was dealing with 50s & 60s
vintage Collins transmitters and receivers. I would think that a
variac connected to a bridge rectifier could provide the dc for the
cap at low voltages.
