I have metioned in the past many times that the panasonic cf-72's and 28's work. There may be other models as well, but these are the two I know for sure work. I have 6 in use for day to day cnc task, no problems thus far. These are very rugged laptops suited for shop use and output a true 5volt at the pport. I havent tried one with SS, but I would assume it would fine. New these sold for $2500-3500. Used/refurb are in the $300-1000 price range. I purchased one last month from ebay for $250.
I have had issues with the run of the mill laptops, dell, hp, gateway, ect. Low quality compared to the panasonic product.

Coming in late to the parade here...It isn't that it flat out will not work, the case is that over on the MACHforum, a lot of people have tried to use a laptop and precious few have metwith any form of reliable success. The timing precision needed for CNC motor control is something that thelaptops designers never ever had in mind.Best bet is to find an Intel box with at least 1GB Ram, 1.8GHz clock speed,50+GB disk space and a stand-alone video controller card. You can run onlesser systems but it will be an exercise in frustration. The system asstated will run flawlessly out of the box.PLEASE NOTE: There have been some issues with certain motherboards -- avisit to the MACH site is in order.Dave> -----Original Message-----> From: CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO@yahoogroups.com > [mailto:CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Danny Miller> Sent: Thursday, October 23, 2008 2:13 PM> To: CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO@yahoogroups.com> Subject: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Mach3 & laptops> > I was looking to set up Mach3 & a Taig with a laptop, and saw on > Artsoft's website that "Laptops are not supported because the power > saving features of the chipsets disrupt the pulse stream".> > What's the real story here?
